さくら (Cherry Blossom) Season

Japanese Cherry BlossomIt’s always fun when さくら sakura (cherry blossom) season begins and the beautiful pink flowers have an explosion, effectively turning Tokyo pink. Not only are they stunning to look at but there’s an entire tradition behind it here in Japan called hanami.

Cherry Blossom Wedding PhotosWith hanami, people admire the blossoms by picnicking under the blooming trees or by having photo shoots at prominent locations lined with the pink blossoms such as this wedding picture that I snapped while heading out from Roppongi’s Midtown.

Japanese Cherry BlossomAnother interesting tidbit about cherry blossom season is that everything suddenly becomes available in sakura flavor – but only for the cherry blossom season. Macaroons, frappuccinos, cakes, biscuits, even ice cream are just a few examples out of the diverse range of choices.

    • This is probably the best time to visit Japan, possibly a couple of weeks earlier if for the trees. Not bad at all with three. I just finished an Italy movie marathon with among others, Under the Tuscan Sun, probably for the tenth time. No cherry blossom there but beautiful nevertheless.

  1. I’m a sucker for cherry blossom. I love the pink frilly pompoms. Sadly the blossom doesn’t last, not here anyway, and before long there are more pink petals strewing the ground than there are on the trees.

  2. Gorgeous cherry blossoms, they look like a little pink fluffy cloud!
Yes indeed, I love the idea of an Henri and Louis in my backyard. Powdered wigs too?
